Make Your Own Luck

Do you know someone who always happens to get lucky? Maybe they find great deals on the things they buy or maybe their professor gives them extension on their paper that none of the other students got. Sometimes you get jealous because you want their luck.

Guess what? These people aren’t any more naturally lucky than you. They make their own luck and with the same amount of effort, you could be the one making your friends jealous.

Did you know you can make your own luck?

A few people have mentioned how lucky I am to be able to make money from a blog. Yes, many things have gone right for me that have allowed this experiment to be successful. But at the same time, I’m the one who took action and started a blog. I spent a lot of time and effort working on it and it took me about 9 months before I made a dollar.

To me, it doesn’t sound like there was much luck at all. The people who consider me lucky never tried, and that’s why they never succeeded.

This can be applied to many situations. The co-worker who got a raise or promotion didn’t get lucky. They did good work and likely asked for it. They made sure to get noticed and rarely does someone get lucky and money just happens to fall into their lap.

The most recent example for me was becoming a WiseBread writer. It’s something I’ve been interested in for awhile, but I wasn’t sure how to approach the subject. So I decided that I would submit a guest post, I’d do my best to promote it drive traffic toward the article, and if all things went well, I’d be able to ask for a permanent position.

I wrote a post, Tips for Playing Credit Card Roulette, and after about 10 days, followed up on my performance and asked to become a staff writer. And I guess I did a good enough job because they agreed that I would be a good fit.

Instead of waiting for opportunities to come to me as I’ve done in the past, I went out and got what I was looking for, simply by asking. As you know, it never hurts to ask. The worst they could have said is no thanks and we would have moved on.

Don’t sit on the sidelines and wait for something to happen to you. Make your own luck and maybe you’ll be the envy of all your friends.

  1. That is one of my biggest pet peeves, when people say “you’re so lucky.” It’s usually lazy people who say it too.

  2. Have to agree with first gen – sometimes luck does play a part, but usually there’s a lot of work going on behind that luck. I just got a new job, and someone told me that I was lucky I found a job within walking distance in this economy. I simply said thanks a lot, but there was little luck involved. I had to submit my application, prepare for the interview and know what I was talking about – while this wasnt done overnight, it was done, and luck had nothing to do with it.
Also, I read the credit card roulette article on wisebread – it was great, and congrats on the staff writer position!

  3. I think luck is just perceived and doesn’t actually exist. If you work hard, invest in yourself and your situation, you will succeed and do well. If you don’t work hard, chances are you won’t get great results. Luck is just in the eye of the beholder and not in someone’s hands.
