Entertaining on a Budget

If you are a low-income earner, you may already have trouble making ends meet some months. This is likely to leave very little money left in your household budget for entertaining or to have fun. While your entertainment budget may be small, there are still plenty of things you can do to have fun and even entertain guests in your home. Below is a look at some tips that will help you plan for a great time even on a low budget.

Dinner Parties

If you enjoy throwing dinner parties but have no way of fitting a huge food bill into your budget, consider having a potluck dinner. There is no reason why just because you are throwing the party that you have to do all the cooking. Plan to serve one of the main menu items and then ask your guests to bring a dish to share. Not only will this slash your food bill, but it will also be fun to try all the different dishes.

Also, if you are going to serve drinks, limit it to just one type of drink, such as margaritas. This will reduce that number of type of liquors you need to buy. In addition, make sure to limit your guest list to the number of people you can reasonably afford to entertain. Perhaps you can hold a couple of dinner parties throughout the year and invite different people to each party. Limiting the number of guests per party will also greatly reduce your expenses.

Local Entertainment

Do you feel like everything is out of your budget, so you just stay home every night? If so, think again. There are most likely plenty of free, or very inexpensive, things to do right in your local area. Scour the paper for local events, fairs and festivals that are being held in your area. Many of these events will be free to enter and often offer free entertainment, as well. You may also have a local park that offers a place for free picnicking, hiking or bicycling.

You can also skip the local movie theater and rent a movie to watch at home or watch a movie on Netflix. This will be a fraction of the cost of going to the theater. You can also check out your local libraries. Some libraries lend out movies and music CDs in addition to books. This would be a great way to watch a movie for no fee at all.

Swap for Babysitting Services

If you are looking for a way to get out of the house without the kids, but hiring a sitter is not in your budget, consider teaming up with another family. Chances are that you are not the only one who wants to get out every once in a while. Talk to a family that you are close to and see if you can trade babysitting services, where you watch their kids one night and they watch yours another night. This can be a great way for mom and dad to get out of the house without the need to pay any babysitter. You just want to make sure you team up with a family that you know well and are sure they will properly care for your kids.

As you can see, entertaining and having fun does not need to cost a lot of money. You just need to be on the lookout for free events, and be a little creative. This will help you feel better about sticking to your probably already tight budget. You may even find that you can even cut back further on your entertainment cost and put that money into a savings account instead.
