After a few more delays from my freelance programmer, our website redesign for SeriousBabies.com is finally complete! I’m really happy with the way it came out, it has all the functionality we were looking for, and I think we can now provide a great user experience that hopefully encourages more use and visits to the site.
We went from having a static site to something interactive where users can create their own captions and even upload their own serious baby pictures. It’s a lot of fun, and we’re hoping it gets some positive feedback.
We just finished the redesign, but really this is just the beginning of our journey. Now that the site is ready, we need to get some visitors to the page. The site itself is now more equipped to get people interested, since instead of having just a handful of pictures, there are now captions that allow for endless possibilities based on user creativity.
Since goals without action steps are just dreams, I’ve developed a plan of how we’ll market the site and get people to come check it out. This will be a four pronged attack:
Facebook – This is our first action item. We already have 100 people who like our Facebook page, and so far almost all of our visitors have come from Facebook. My wife is a very popular Facebooker, each picture we promoted got about 300 visits within 48 hours, and then traffic dropped back down to nearly nothing. Now, instead of promoting the same picture multiple times and friends getting fatigued, we’ll be able to promote each popular caption separately, so each post will be new, which we think will increase engagement. We also have a very prominent Facebook button on the site, so we hope visitors will like the page to get future updates.
Pinterest – I do not have a whole lot of experience with Pinterest, but I have heard from others that it can be a great way to get traffic, and I think we have the perfect type of site for this. We plan on adding the funny/cute/popular images to our Pinterest page, and our hope is that moms and people who love cute baby pictures with funny captions will repin and share the images with their friends. I’ll be doing some networking here, trying to build a following.
Contests – To get people to be engaged with the site, I’d like to host a caption contest . We don’t have a specific prize in mind, but I’m thinking some sort of personalized baby gear might be appropriate. I can’t wait to see what people come up with!
Guest Posts – Finally, we’ll be promoting the site by writing posts for mommy blogs and other human interest sites to get the word out. This is not a short-term project (we don’t have a baby yet, but when we do, we’ll be able generate a lot more content), so any posts we write will get an initial boost and then we’ll enjoy the benefits down the road as well.
Other Action Steps
We also want to get some more images so users will have a larger selection to choose from. I have a couple great ideas (baby with a ‘MOM’ tattoo lifting weights is one) that I think users will love. So we’ll kidnap our niece and nephew for a day and have a little fun with them and see if we can knock those smiles off their faces!
What do you think of the site update?
