HaHa Daniel, this is a good idea. I’ve been tracking my daily changes on a 3×5 card at my desk. I guess I can just use your chart since you are taking the challenge to a new level.

    Great job young man,

    Jeff

Jeff-san, if you installed the toolbar and badge, you wouldn’t have to write anything down. It’d update automatically!

    Thank-you Master,

I like my 3×5 card. I acts as a reminder for me and all my co-workers are going nuts trying to figure out what the numbers mean. Haha I love messing with them.

  • Thanks for putting this together–I’ll be back every week to check up! :)

  • FFB:

So how does this work exactly? Do you just track everyone or are you supposed to visit everyone? Thanks!

    [Reply]

    Daniel Packer Reply:

Ideally we’d all be visiting each other’s site with the toolbar and our numbers would increase, but check out FS’s original post where he describes several other ways to increase your Alexa ranking.

Bad ass! The only thing I would add is a % change, since 846 for Big Pete is a whole different story than a 846 for me.

You read my mind. I already have some expanded standings that’ll be introduced next week. I’ll also have a version somewhere that includes every week’s numbers, so in a few months we’ll be able to look back and see our progress.

Actually, I’ve been moving up a lot even before this. My weekly and monthly stats have been right around 200,000, so over time the old stuff will drop up. Maybe this will give me that little push I need to get over the hump!

  • Just an idea to share… I use Google reader. I set up a folder with all my Alexa blog feeds and give them priority when reading blogs… Most days, I don’t have time to cover them all but this means virtually every day (sometimes every other) yours (the samurai list) gets preference.

For the others, I generally only read in Google, for Alexa blogs I always link to the site. I’m assuming this makes a difference. Someone tell me if I am wrong!

Monevator gave me in his weekly roundup list.

Don’t know how much work is involved, but would it be worthwhile to create a Carnival of ____, Facebook group, or Twitter Listing to help promote those within the challenge?

Not sure the best avenue, but thinking of ways to collaborate on concentrated efforts and move EVERYONE up. As David says, it’s ambitious but we can all do it.

I’ll be “dropping the F’bomb” in a little. This is my phrase to mass-messaging your entire facebook friend list. I’ll mention this site and ask they check out the other sites too.

David – How you handling the snow? Plenty of time to work on the blog yeah? If you’re going to the happy hour, we can hash out ideas over a few brews.

    When there’s a will, there’s a way! :)

I was thinking about this last night. Short of writing a macro, there may be an easy “duct-tape repair” method that would still accomplish the goal (update automatically), but not be as clean.

Dan, I will go through it some more and can get with you later if you’re interested.

    [Reply]

    Daniel Reply:

I’ll see you tonight at the HH and you explain that to me. I was thinking maybe a web query, but there’s definitely a way. Having it update every day automatically would be cool.

    [Reply]

    Money Reasons Reply:

If I knew php and mysql better, I’d create an app that would update the table once a day (I still might do it just for fun). Then we could have a webpage that would display different sort orders and different percentage changes (over 1 week, 2 weeks, month, etc) calculated daily. Not to mention the datamining potential on down the pipe (tuesdays vs friday… etc) per site, and composite…

But, we’re addicted enough already? Right? Wouldn’t that make it worse?

If anyone would like that, I could start working on it (it would probably take me a few weeks, maybe even a month since I’m a php, mysql nub…).

A month? You know how many people will go through withdrawal!

Great idea. Talked with Dan about it last night some. It’s always worth putting the time/energy to make a quality product the first time than going back and revising it later.

As far as some of your ideas, aren’t those things already provided in Alexa? Were you thinking more data extraction or calculation/manipulation?

Appreciate both you and Daniel stepping up to the plate.

    [Reply]

    Money Reasons Reply:

    @FinEngr

LOL, yeah, a month would be a long time… I was going to do my thing in parallel, so we would still use the spreadsheet method (which is very sweet), while I was going to try to throw something together.

Dan found a way to script out the extraction! Good Job Dan!!!

I was just thinking out loud in my post. I’m a SQL guy by trade, and we love to massage data… Most of the things I talked about aren’t really necessary or all that interesting (except to me :) ).

I’ll keep playing with it because if I do it right (by making it somewhat generic), I can use the code for other future projects unrelated to the Alexa Challenge too.

Again, GREAT JOB Dan, he’s the one that has done all of the great tracking efforts with this. I was just lobbing out some ideas I had… :)

The most important piece was making the task automated or scripted (which Dan was able to accomplish)!

  • Brad:

Update, update, update…I need my update! (shaking violently) LOL Looks like I am not the only one to come here for my Alexa crack rock. I’m starting to get fidgety. I’m just hoping that Daniel waits just long enough that my Alexa ranking has time to drop on more time. (That happens around 5a.m.) LOL the fact that I know that makes me feel like a looser. I guess I will settle for the Google Analytics buzz for this evening.

Thanks again for doing this Daniel!

    [Reply]

  • Wow, look at the progress of practically everybody! Well done everyone!

Also, given that Wise Bread is changing the rules on us by adding more and more blogs that are off shoots of major publications (see the newest #1 and #2 rank), it makes me happy that we are keeping this challenge purely as independent personal finance bloggers!

I’ll be coming up with an update on the challenge in a week or two, so stay tuned.

    Yakezie clan UNITE!

    Best,

    Samurai

    [Reply]

    Money Reasons Reply:

Yeah, the catch is that those 2 websites aren’t even real independent money blogs… They are online newspapers, that have a money section. I doubt they would have such a high alexa ranking if they stood alone as independent pf money blogs…

I wonder if wisebread even realizes that the new entries are online newspapers sections?

I guess someone will come up with a more pure (only) independent personal finance blogs if it gets too weighted down with such entries…

  • One way to smooth out fluctuations for the percentage is to take geometric averages over longer periods, e.g. suppose the rank was 173, 170, 171, 165, for four weeks, you’d calculate 1-(165/173)^1/3.

I hope so! But that means I’ll have to rearrange the rankings! Oh well, worth it! What do you think of the new format of updating daily? Showing week over week is cool as well as the one day move.

Of course, the first day I roll it out is the day alexa decides to take forever to post the updated rankings.

    [Reply]

    FinEngr Reply:

    @Daniel,

I don’t see significant value in daily reporting (for the group). The fluctuations are too dependent on external factors. But for this reason, it would be good for individuals to track. Ex: It’d be nice to see how your ranking jumps after a guest post or promotional offer.

Maybe I’m just biased because my posting is erratic ;)

You got me thinking, and something that could return a number of benefits would be to track our group’s progress vs. the general PF blogging market.

A rough idea, it could be broken down into current rankings like you have now, aggregated from some source (here’s where my ??? comes in), and using the weekly median (or if you prefer, the average) of each range to track our progress. Just like with stocks, we could see who the market leaders & laggards are. If everyone continues along the honorable path, we could use that information to focus our efforts on commenting/tweeting/promoting those who didn’t meet the benchmark.

The marketing benefit of this could be as the group grows, and if the group continues to outperform the general PF blogging market, than more people will want to join the group because there’s real results with real data to support that growth.

Ever see that commercial where these guys pitch this awesome idea, the boss gives them the go-ahead, and they reply, “oh no, we just come up with the ideas”…. Alright Dan, there’s the idea – get to work! ;)

    [Reply]

  • Brad:

  • I think the widget really helped me. I tried convincing my nonwebmaster readers to install the toolbar, but I don’t think very many did although some already had it installed. I’ve dropped 10%+ in just a week and much more on the month stat (about 20%, it’s at). If we look at it like
“old ranking”*3 week+ultimate ranking*1 week=”current ranking after 1 week”*4, then maybe one could hope for 239*3+x=189*4 or x = 39. An alexa rank of 39000 would be amazing. Also try 239*11+x=217*12 => x<0. Clearly there's a law of diminishing returns but this also indicates that a more realistic ranking should be obtainable within 3 months and that even 1 month would be a definite improvement. Projections should be more realistic after 2 weeks.

    [Reply]

    Daniel Reply:

@Early Retirement Extreme, yah, I’ve looked at it a little bit and I should be at -100,000 in about 3 months, so we’ll see lol. It’s hard to project where we’ll level out, but the one month rankings on the site are also helpful for where we’re headed. Maybe I’ll add that soon because it gives a clearer picture of where we could be at if we keep up the progress. A mini-goal among the larger goals.

We see that the 50,000 has less movement, but they’re definitely making some nice progress even with the tough competition!

Or maybe I should just stick to what I’m good at. Like making lots of money and not spending it. :-)

@jacqjolie, No need to worry. I’m my blog is just about 2weeks old and i’m at 9M on Alexa. Yet, i think the Yakezie initiative is promising and with my efforts, i will make it before July. Don’t feel discouraged
