Give This Gift If You Want To Piss Off Your Husband

I love getting surprises, but there’s one I wouldn’t be too thrilled with. If Lauren ever does this to me, we’d have a problem.

I love the enthusiasm, but I’m pretty sure major purchases shouldn’t be surprises. Surprise, I just locked you into a $30,000 contract and you’re going to be paying someone else every single month for the next 5 years!

Gifts That Keep on Taking

There are a few other gifts that work in similar ways. While it may seem very generous, an xbox 360 for example is sweet because it’s expensive and you may not have been willing to pay for it yourself. But, there’s another side to it. You’re now responsible for buying games to go along with it, and at $50/each, the costs can add up. And you don’t want to waste a brand new, xbox, right?

Similarly, getting someone a nice picture without a frame kinda sucks because you’re forcing them to spend on getting it framed, which can definitely be expensive.

Be smart with your gifts, don’t give gifts that will cost the other person money. And if you’re in a relationship and buying a gift with shared money, don’t buy something really expensive that the receiver will have to share the costs of.

Readers, do you hate gifts that keep on taking? What other terrible gifts have you gotten?

Why I Didn’t Save $400 on Car Insurance

When I bought my first car, I knew there would be significant costs associated with maintenance and insurance. So I did what any smart shopper does, and I compared the price of insurance by getting quotes from several insurers. I used to work for an auto insurance company, and no company is ALWAYS better. Progressive and GEICO are known for having low rates, and Allstate and State Farm are known for having higher prices. But since rates are based on different models, some drivers will get a better rate with one insurance company and someone else might get a better rate with another.

So I did my due diligence and found that there was a really large range in prices. For a 6 month policy, I found prices as low as about $600 and as high as $1,000. Obviously I decided to go with something at the low end of the scale, and ultimately, I am paying just over $100 per month of car insurance, which I hear is pretty good.

Am I happy with my rate? Yes. Do I tell people that I saved $400 on my car insurance? Absolutely not!

While I am paying $400 less than I could have had I gone with the expensive insurance, I do not consider it savings. All it is is smart comparison shopping. If you go to a supermarket and look at two jars of peanut butter, one for $5 and one for $4, you don’t save a dollar by buying the cheaper one, you simply are spending less and avoiding overpaying for something you can get for a better rate!

It doesn’t make sense to pay more for something you can get at the same quality for a better price. This is how smart shoppers operate. Find the one with the best quality and price, and buy it. Just because there’s a worse price out there doesn’t make this purchase a better deal.

Advertising companies employ a technique called anchoring to trick you into believing you’re getting a better deal than you are.

Here’s an example:

There are two TVs in a store, one for $1,500 and one for $2,000. They have the same specifications, and there are very minor differences. Which one would you buy? You’re likely to go with the cheaper option, pay $1,500 and walk away thinking you got a great deal.

But guess what? Maybe that TV wasn’t worth $1,500? Maybe you just think it’s a great deal because your other option was so much more expensive?

So I pay $100 on my car insurance, but I didn’t save money. It’s just another expense.

Readers, do you think this is the right way to look at the world? Should I be ecstatic about not paying more for the same thing? Do we get duped all the time into paying more because advertisers play games with us?

How to Save on Staples in the City

I was in New York a few weeks ago, and on Friday afternoon, I took a trip to the supermarket to stock up on food for the weekend. What I found was unlike any other supermarket in any other city I’ve been in. Cereal was almost $6 for a box. A bag of chips that’s typically $3.50 was no less than $5.50, and a bottle of soda, often 99 cents, turned into a $1.50 2-liter.

My eyes bugged out. I wanted to believe that I was in a bad dream. I wanted to run out of the store crying and sit in a corner for two days until it was time to leave. $6 for a box of cereal? Ridiculous.

As my friends making low wages continue to struggle to make it in the Big Apple, I couldn’t imagine that they were being forced to pay such ridiculous prices. And worse, they go along with it as if there are no other alternatives.

However, there are some easy ways to cut costs. Let’s go through some alternatives to paying big bucks for basic groceries.

I’ve discussed Amazon’s subscribe and save options before, but here it has a very real world application.

That almost $6 box of cereal? A quick look at a non-special shows 3 boxes of Honey Nut Cheerios for just $8.45. Already that’s a fantastic deal, and with subscribe and save, the price drops to just $7.18 for three boxes, which is less than $2.40 a box! That’s more than 50% off, and you can cancel whenever you want (I suggest immediately after the order goes through so you don’t get charged if the price rises later after you forget about it!)

Feel free to check out the other breakfast foods, I’m positive that these prices beat your supermarket prices.

Breakfast not your thing? Let’s look at pasta sauce: A 4 pack of 45 ounce bottle of Ragu on Amazon is just $9.08 with subscribe an save. For reference, I’m used to paying $2.50 for ONE 24-ounce bottle on pasta sauce! It’s not even close.

We could do this all day. I have no idea what the specials look like, but I’m sure if you check out Amazon once in a while, you’ll find some great deals.

Disclaimer: I don’t get paid for anything you buy. I just know that this information can help lower the costs of living in expensive cities.

Top 10 Reasons to Shop Online vs. Shopping In-Store

Now that the Internet has exploded, thousands of merchants have put their entire inventory online for you to view and shop from whenever you want! There are many reasons why shopping online is so much better than shopping in-stores.

Daniel’s note: I’ve written before about why I don’t go shopping and this is a great list that just backs up my point!

  1. Save on pricey gas and valuable time. With gas prices looming near $4 a gallon, it’s definitely not something to be wasted. Even a five minute trip to your local mall can turn into a fifteen minute excursion if the parking lot is crowded. While even that may not seem like a lot, think of how many times you visit stores during the week. With all of that extra gas, you could go on a long road trip! Save time too by shopping from home. No need to take the time to get ready, drive, park, and walk around to browse. Simply type in what you want and instantly find what you are looking for.
  2. Organizing your finances is easy. You won’t have to worry about misplacing receipts ever again when you shop online. Since everything is done electronically, all records of your transactions are emailed directly to your inbox. Your house will no longer be cluttered with piles of receipts. Plus, you’re helping out the environment by going paperless!
  3. Pay with a credit card safely, even to small merchants. Using credit cards to pay is easy, but sometimes your favorite small merchants or artisans can’t accept them. When you shop online, many dealers both big and small use PayPal. PayPal is a website that lets you create an account for free. You simply enter in your information, and they act as a middleman when you make payments so merchants can’t see your information. Shopping this way is safe, and you will always be able to pay for the great products you want!
  4. Always find the best deals. Comparison shopping no longer means driving from store to store or flipping through many different ads. Comparing prices is literally just a click away. You can use search engines like Google or a specific comparison shopping website to easily find out which merchants have the lowest prices. Many times, stores will offer online exclusive sales, so it pays to shop online!
  5. Don’t waste time clipping coupons. Finding the coupons you want online is simple, and there is no cutting required! Simply find a coupon aggregator that you love, then search for your favorite merchant and use coupon codes online. All you have to do is click to save instantly at your favorite stores! There are many different coupons online that can save you tons of money, including ones for free shipping!
  6. No more waiting in line and pushing through crowds. Malls and retail stores can be chaotic, especially during a big sale or a holiday season. Don’t stress yourself out, just shop from home! You’ll never have to stand in a long checkout line or weave your way through crowds just to get the items you want. Shop online and you can stay in the comfort of your own home.
  7. Find items you might not see in stores. Since brick and mortar stores are limited on space, merchants usually don’t carry all of the items they sell in store. Online, you can find their entire inventory, along with many choices of colors, styles, and even customization options. Shop on the Internet so you can find exactly what you want.
  8. The Internet never closes. You can shop anytime online 24 hours a day 7 days a week. Online stores never close, so you never have to worry about making time to go to the store. Online shopping is perfect for night owls or anyone who is just too busy to make a trip to the store.
  9. Shop any store worldwide. Never again be limited geographically. Many merchants do not have physical stores in every state, and certainly not in every country. When you shop online, you can browse through stores around the block or around the globe! Discover amazing new items from exotic places that you perhaps have never even heard of before.
  10. Ship your gifts directly. When you order online, you can send gifts or even have gift baskets delivered directly to their recipient. This means you can avoid long waits at the post office and you can get your gift delivered faster. Many stores even offer customized cards and gift wrapping to go along with your present.
